Story Line:
This novel's narrator, Oscar Fairfax, writes a memoir meant to be not only a personal document but also an intellectual and social portrait of his times--the entire span of the 20th century as experienced by America's WASP elite. In the course of his narrative, Fairfax reveals to us that his impeccable manners and breeding mask a moral emptiness that is not only tolerated but shared by many of his friends and associates.
